Gardens in France > > Parc Maupassant de bois Savary

The Parc Maupassant de bois Savary won third prize in the 2009 Briggs and Stratten 'Best Park in Europe Competition'. The Park covers 22 hectares and took 17 years to restore to its current glory. Parts of the garden can now be retraced to 1440.
The garden is a superb example of the French Formal style of Garden which achieved the height of its glory with the Chateaus of Versailles and Villandry. The current owners are passionate about 17 and 18th century gardens.
The park has many balades and vistas, loads of magnificent water features and a superb collection of Peonies.
One of the highlights of the garden is the 'Bosquets'. These 16 green chambers are a series of square gardens of 400 square meters surrounded by high hedges and each with its own individual theme:- the Japanese garden, the red garden, the spiral garden etc.
The garden also has one of those amazing potagers or vegatable gardens that the French are so good at. An artistic work of art and yet all edible. The vegetables are grown in a series of formal patterns and include lots of ancient and forgotten varieties. The vegetable garden won the first prize of the Society of Horticulture of Potagers of France in 2007.
During the weekends it is possible to sample the wines of the region and have a snack. There is also a gift shop on the site.
