The Jardins de Drulon are in the Cher department of France in the town of Loye sur Arnon.

These gardens are a real treat for flower lovers. The gardens were designed by the landscape designers J Gerard and A. de Saint Venant with the brief of designing something unusual, exuberant and extremely flowery - and they have certainly done that.

The domaine which includes an attractive chateau and 200 hectares of land was bought by Piet and Nanou Hendriks in 1998 and they immediately set to restoring the chateau and clearing and redesigning the land.

In 2000 the gardens were opened to the public and in 2001 the gardens were already recognised as a "Jardin d'exception" and by 2006 they had been expanded and matured and were awarded the "Jardin Remarquable" label.

The garden is entered along an avenue of ancient oaks. A quince orchard and borders filled with irises, day-lilies and roses then gives a taster of the colour-explosion that greets visitors on the other side of the sandstone walls.

The delightful flower garden is designed on the site of an ancient vegetable garden and is surrounded by walls and tall hedges. The gardens are laid out in a formal pattern of 15 large beds set around a small pond. The beds are then filled with an abundance of flowers in colour groupings ranging from cold to pastel to hot.

Leaving the flower garden a gazebo leads you towards the 'chamber garden', the 'wild garden', the 'secret garden', the 'Bacchus garden' and the latest addition is the 'Paean garden' packed full of peonies, daylilies and roses. The peonies include a collection of rare Chinese peonies.

As well as the beautiful planting the gardens (and the chateau and outbuildings) are dotted with a number of contemporary sculptures. The sculpture exhibition changes every year giving a different aspect to the interior and to the gardens each year.

The gardens are open from April to October every year and each of these months has a selection of key flowering plants to ensure a succession of colour and interest throughout the period.
