Explore the Jardin des Songes
This delightful garden is in the picturesque Largue valley in southern Alsace. Set at 375 meters and benefiting from a number of natural ponds the garden has been created and developed over the last 30 years.
The garden, which is about a hectare in total, is made up of a number of different scenes and perspectives and has a strong Italian and mediterranean influence despite its position in the north east of France.
Close to the house the Tuscan influence is particularly strong with clipped box and a beautiful wisteria covered pergola. Further from the house the planting and design become more natural. Borders are filled with roses, clematis, peonies and many bulbs and perennials.
Water features are abundant and linked by streams and waterfalls. The edges are abundantly planted with water loving plants such as hydrangeas, gunneras, rodgersias, hostas, geums, iris and many more.
A medieval-inspired herb garden also serves as the nursery for their young plants and cuttings and a recently bought wood has been underplanted with lots of woodland plants. There is also a Japanese-style garden.
In the autumn the large number of Japanese acers and other trees with rich autumn colours make the gardens a delight to visit even at this later part of the season.
Walking through the gardens is an immense pleasure and a gardener's delight. A delight shared by many as evidenced by the garden having been voted the best garden in the Alsace region - 2013.
It also won the 1st prize of the national "Bonpland" competition in 2011 ( a prize organised by the national Horticultural Society of France) and was awarded the coveted "Jardin Remarquable" status in 2012.
