Visit Jardin des Plantes at La Rochelle
Some areas of France do not have many private gardens to visit but many of the larger towns have a 'Jardin des Plantes' and these are often well worth a visit.
Explore the Jardin des Plantes at La-Rochelle
The Jardin des Plantes at La Rochelle contains a bit more bedding plants than I normally like but these have been mixed with some beautiful exotic plants, taking advantage of the year round mild climate of La Rochelle, and many perennials and I returned to the garden several times during my stay in the town to enjoy the planting.
The garden sits behind La Rochelle's Natural History Museum which is also well worth a visit containing many 'treasures' brought back by sailors when new parts of the world were just being discovered.
The part of the garden closest to the museum used Pennisetum plants abundantly, mixed with grasses, heucheras and sedums amongst others and the combination worked well. In fact the close planting of heuchera and sedum is one I will try in my garden as the heuchera hides the gaps when the sedum dies back in winter.
